PoCketON
Mission: Save the Earth
Pocketon is a fast-paced, hands-on learning experience designed for primary school students to discover science- in this case, Geology- through innovation. In a compact, time-boxed session, mixed teams ideate and build pocket-size Proofs of Concept (PoCs) that address real planetary challenges—coasts at risk, plastic pollution, water scarcity, energy and materials, natural hazards, and more.

What happens
- Kick-off: Scientists and professionals set the context with inspiring, plain-language prompts linked to everyday geology.
- Team sprint: Students work in squads with light mentorship, following a simple design-thinking arc—Problem → Idea → Low-fi Prototype → Test/Explain.
- Demo & reflection: Each team delivers a 1–2 minute “show-and-tell” highlighting what works, what they learned, and next steps.
Why it matters
PoCketON translates geology into tangible action, cultivating curiosity, teamwork, and scientific thinking while revealing how Earth sciences shape daily life and a sustainable future.
Who it’s for
- Participants: Primary school students, mixed ability and backgrounds.
- Mentors/Refs: Geologists, engineers, educators, and industry partners who want to spark STEAM vocations.
Outcomes
- A portfolio of student-made PoCs that make invisible Earth processes visible.
- Early exposure to scientific method, evidence-based reasoning, and responsible innovation.
- Bridges between schools, the professional geoscience community, and society.
Get involved
Schools, mentors, and sponsors are welcome to join. Help us turn curiosity into impact and inspire the next generation of geoscientists.
PoCketON will run as an outreach activity aligned with the 5th International Professional Geology Conference, showcasing student demos and takeaways to the wider community.
The results will be announced during the International Professional Geology Conference
