Zaragoza, Spain

Zaragoza is the capital of the region of Aragon in the north-east of Spain and is the country’s 5th largest city. It has around 700,000 inhabitants.

Situated along the banks of the Ebro, Huerva, and Gállego rivers, as well as the Imperial Canal of Aragon, Zaragoza is positioned in the central part of the Ebro Valley. A portion of its municipal territory is occupied by the nature reserve of Sotos y Galachos del Ebro.

The city bears the titles of Very Noble, Very Loyal, Very Heroic, Very Beneficial, Always Heroic, and Immortal, largely granted in recognition of its resistance against the Napoleonic army during the Sieges of Zaragoza in the War of Independence. These titles are reflected in its coat of arms, featuring the initials of each.

In the year 2008, from June 14th to September 14th, marking the bicentenary of the Sieges of Zaragoza and the centenary of the 1908 Hispano-French Exhibition, Zaragoza hosted the international exposition Expo Zaragoza 2008, dedicated to water and sustainable development. Additionally, Zaragoza served as the headquarters for the United Nations Secretariat for the Water Decade 2005-2015.
